At Somerville MMA, our Junior MMA program goes beyond punches and kicks — it’s about teaching kids how to move with confidence, think with clarity, and face challenges with resilience.
Through structured training in striking, grappling, and wrestling, children gain strength, focus, and discipline while learning respect, teamwork, and self-belief that will stay with them far beyond the mats.

5 (very good) reasons your child should do mixed martial aRTS
1
Builds Comprehensive Physical Fitness and Motor Skills
MMA develops strength, balance, coordination, and endurance through a mix of striking, wrestling, and grappling. Research shows children in combat sports improve their overall fitness and body awareness faster than in traditional sports, building the foundation for lifelong physical health and athletic ability.
2
Improves Cognitive Function and Decision-Making Under Pressure
In MMA, kids learn to think fast and stay calm under pressure - skills that strengthen focus, problem-solving, and emotional control. Studies show this type of training enhances brain function and attention, helping children perform better both in sport and in the classroom.
3
Develops Emotional Control, Discipline, and Confidence
MMA teaches kids how to stay composed, disciplined, and confident in challenging situations. Through structured training and positive coaching, they learn to manage frustration, channel their energy productively, and gain a strong sense of self-belief that carries beyond the mats.
4
Builds Resilience and a Growth Mindset Through Challenge
Progress in MMA comes through persistence — learning new skills, making mistakes, and trying again. This process builds resilience and teaches kids that improvement takes effort and patience, helping them develop a mindset that embraces hard work and long-term goals.
5
Encourages Respectful Social Interaction and Team Values
MMA isn’t just about individual skill — it’s built on partnership, communication, and respect. Kids learn to train safely with teammates, support one another, and build friendships grounded in trust and shared effort, all while growing their social confidence and empathy.
