At Somerville MMA, we believe that learning Jiu Jitsu isn’t just about moves — it’s about growing stronger physically and mentally.
Our juniors are taught that it’s okay to feel emotions, to struggle, and even to cry — but it’s never okay to give up on themselves or their team mates.

This simple phrase guides everything we do on and off the mat.
"you can cry, but you can't quit."

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on leverage, technique, and strategy rather than size or strength. It teaches students how to control opponents and defend themselves through positions, escapes, and submissions like holds and locks. Beyond self-defence, BJJ builds confidence, discipline, and problem-solving skills that carry over into everyday life.

5 (very good) reasons your child should do jiu jitsu
1
Improves self-regulation & executive function (Control & Focus)
Jiu-jitsu helps kids develop real-life focus and self-control - skills proven to boost school performance and emotional regulation. Research shows martial arts training improves children’s attention span, decision-making, and ability to manage frustration, all while they’re having fun learning new moves on the mats.
2
Reduces aggressive behaviour and increases pro-social behaviour
Contrary to what some might think, martial arts don’t make kids more aggressive - they actually do the opposite. Studies show that programs like jiu-jitsu help children learn discipline, respect, and how to stay calm under pressure. Kids quickly realize strength isn’t about hurting others; it’s about having control over yourself.
3
Boosts self-efficacy, mental wellbeing and emotional resilience
Every time your child learns a new technique or overcomes a challenge on the mats, they’re training more than just their body - they’re strengthening their mindset. Research shows martial arts boost self-belief and resilience, helping kids handle setbacks, stress, and big emotions both on and off the mats.
4
Provides meaningful physical-fitness gains (aerobic capacity, strength, body composition)
Jiu-jitsu is a full-body workout that develops coordination, strength, flexibility, and endurance - without feeling like exercise. Studies on young martial artists show clear improvements in fitness, muscle tone, and overall health. It’s a great way for kids to stay active and build healthy habits for life.
5
Enhances social connectedness and reduces anxiety through structured peer interaction
Jiu-jitsu classes are built on teamwork, communication, and mutual respect. Kids work closely with partners, build trust, and develop lasting friendships. Studies show these positive social connections - along with the physical activity - help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and boost overall wellbeing.
