At Somerville MMA, we encourage everyone to try competing, not just for trophies, but for the valuable experience and personal growth it offers. Whether it's your first competition or you're an experienced athlete, stepping onto the mat helps build confidence, resilience, and a deeper understanding of your own abilities. Competing allows you to challenge yourself, learn from the experience, and gain knowledge that extends far beyond the gym. We believe that every competitor, regardless of outcome, grows stronger through the process.

Australian Jiu Jitsu Competition
The Australian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competition scene offers a structured pathway for practitioners of all ages and skill levels, from juniors to adults. Competitions are primarily governed by the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (AFBJJ), which aligns with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) standards. For juniors (typically under 16), competitions are categorized by age, belt, and weight, fostering a safe and fair environment for skill development.
As athletes progress, they transition into adult divisions, which are further segmented into belt ranks and weight classes. Additionally, the IBJJF Master divisions cater to practitioners aged 30 and above, with age categories spanning from Master I (30-35) to Master VI (56-60), ensuring that competitors face peers within their age group. This structured framework allows individuals to continually challenge themselves, set goals, and experience personal growth throughout their BJJ journey.
why compete?
Competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers numerous benefits that go beyond just improving technique. It provides a unique opportunity for personal growth, helping athletes build mental toughness, resilience, and self-confidence. The pressure of competition forces practitioners to apply their skills in real-life situations, pushing them to refine their techniques and adapt under pressure.
It also fosters discipline, focus, and perseverance, as athletes must train consistently and strategically to perform well. Additionally, competition promotes a sense of camaraderie, as competitors often form strong bonds with training partners and teammates while sharing the experience. Ultimately, competing in Jiu-Jitsu helps athletes challenge their limits, learn from both wins and losses, and accelerate their development on and off the mats.
